The History of Yoga

7/12, 12:30-5:30pm

Ever wonder where yoga postures came from? How the studio-based yoga practice that we so cherish today evolved from the ancient traditions and texts of the past 2000+ years? Spend this illuminating day of inquiry with me and let’s dig into yoga’s exciting and multitudinous roots together.

Sat, July 18, 7:30-9:30pm
Please join me and Sean Feit in this special event to raise money for earthquake survivors in Nepal. I will be teaching a candlelit, mindful flow class and Sean will provide live music and a closing Buddhist meditation on compassion. ALL proceeds go directly to Upaya Zen Center’s Nepal Earthquake Relief Fund, which works closely with local organizations in Nepal. Cash donations preferred, but checks can also be accepted. Suggested donation: $25. Space is limited.

The Yoga Sutra

7/19, 12:30-5:30pm
Written by the sage Patañjali 2000 years ago, this is one of the most defining texts of yoga philosophy and psychology. Here, Patañjali offers an 8-limb structure (which includes ethical considerations and breath work, as well as concentration and contemplation practices) that offers a complete path for spiritual practice. In this daylong workshop, we’ll explore this captivating text, and gain a deeper understanding of the ways in which it is still highly relevant to our modern day practice.

Prana Vayus, Gunas, and Doshas (Advanced Teacher Training*)

8/2 – 8/22 (Tue/Fri, 6:30-9; Sat/Sun, 12:30-5:30)
In this course, you will examine yourself from a physical, mental, and energetic perspective, and learn the upaya (effective means) to move toward higher levels of health and conscious awareness through the practices of yoga, meditation, and svadyaya (self-examination). You’ll learn how to direct the flow of prana (life force); better understand and work with your Ayurvedic constitution; better understand the workings of the mind; and–if you’re a teacher–how to relay this ancient wisdom to your own students. *This course offers 50 hours for the 300-hr advanced teacher training at Yoga Garden, but is also open to the public.
